Clinical Supervision

Dear supervisee,

I am writing this thinking of you. If you are reading this, you’ve looked through my website, and might be wondering if you want to work with me as your supervisor.

This is a very important question: choosing the right supervisor is one of the most important self-care tips and development path to support and walk together with you as you work with clients.

I know you are passionate about your counselling and/or supervising work. I know you want to give your best practice skills to your clients and supervisees and you are looking for a supervisor who can understand what you need for your practice.

I am a supervisor, and might be the one for you!

To help you decide, I’ll tell you a bit about how I am used to working with my supervisees.

While I was attending my online supervision course I set up my personal way to supervise online, and my supervisees gave me very good feedback about how it worked for them. I called it “the equilateral triangle” model of online supervision.

It is an equilateral triangle because we are all working together to reach the best outcome for your clients and supervisees: It starts with your client, who is supported by you as their therapist; you are supported by myself as your supervisor.

You might also be supervising other counsellors, for which you migh also need supervision with me.

In the same way, I have my own supervisor of supervision in a long chain of practitioners who work to the same aim: working with our clients to the best practice standards.

That what supervision should be, according to my approach.

My first goal is to set up a positive and secure online relationship.

It is done through a good contract that you can agree and pinpoint if anything couldn’t fit your needs, we can chat about it and review it.

Then, we choose the best platform for you, I work with emails, webcam and Instant messaging chats.

Our relationship is our main tool: if you felt secure and welcome with all your feelings, doubts, and ethical dilemmas from your practice, we are at the core condition of your work.

Then, we work according to some main supervision models, adapted to the online environment: the Cyclical Model from Page and Wosket (2015), 7 Eyed Model of Hawkins and Shohet (2012).

These are the scaffolding of my practice but there are many other suggestions from a wide range of supervision models I keep because of a specific supervisee.

Since I am a creative person, the chance of using some creative tools is in my toolkit, it depends on the situation and person.

I constantly study and update my approach working with my supervisor as well.

One of the main questions I have is about how to work with different approaches, and it is a good question, isn’t it?

My experience taught me that supervision isn’t about an approach, it is about a relationship.

Supervisees and supervisors developing relationships that invite jointly creating knowledge. (…)A notion of postmodernism is language and knowledge are relational and generative.”

This is exactly my perspective about different approaches: establishing our supervisory relationship develps trust, and from trusting you as a practitioner, expert in your approach, together we can face your doubts, your perplexities, whatever happens in your counselling room, even we don’t work in the same way.

Furthermore, having different approaches in our work is a richness for our clients, we learn from each other.

According to A. Stockes and G. Jones (2009), online supervision “…is a space to reflect on work with clients, and to make sure that neither clients nor ethical issues, or the process between the client and the counsellor, are being overlooked. It must be a safe enough relationship for the counsellor to be open and honest, while enabling challenge and professional development to take place.”
